FDA Peptide Reclassification 2026: The Full List of What Actually Changed

If you follow peptides at all, 2026 has been chaos. Headlines say BPC-157 is “legal now.” Other sites still say it’s “banned.” Your group chat has three different answers. Here’s the calm, accurate version — with the distinctions that actually matter.

The one-paragraph summary

In early 2026 the FDA moved a group of peptides off its Category 2 restricted list. That does not mean they’re FDA-approved drugs, and it does not automatically mean a pharmacy can compound them. Three different things are in play, and most confusion comes from blurring them together. For the current status of each specific peptide, see our live legal-status tracker.

The three things people confuse

  1. Coming off Category 2 — the FDA’s list of bulk substances with safety concerns that pharmacies can’t use.
  2. 503A eligibility — whether a compounding pharmacy may actually make it for patients. This is decided separately, by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC).
  3. FDA drug approval — the full approval a product like Wegovy has. None of the “research peptides” have this.

A peptide can be off Category 2, not yet 503A-eligible, and not FDA-approved — all at once. That’s exactly where BPC-157 sits today.

What this means if you’re a patient

Removal from Category 2 lowers one barrier — it doesn’t turn a research chemical into something you should buy from a website. The safest, most legally sound route is unchanged: a prescription from a licensed provider, filled by a compounding pharmacy. Products sold as “research chemicals, not for human consumption” bypass quality controls entirely.
