Growth hormone

Sermorelin

GHRH(1-29), formerly Geref

Sermorelin is the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone and was once FDA-approved as Geref for children with growth hormone deficiency. The brand was discontinued for business reasons, and today it is mainly prepared by compounding pharmacies.

Key facts

  • Commonly discussed for: supporting natural growth hormone levels in adults.
  • Evidence (C): Its approval rested on pediatric growth studies, such as a 110-child Geref study where height velocity roughly doubled over 6 months. Evidence for the adult wellness uses it is discussed for today is small and largely uncontrolled.
  • FDA status: Compoundable. FDA withdrew the Geref approvals in June 2009 at the maker's request and determined in March 2013 that they were not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons, which compounders cite as the basis for 503A compounding.
  • Legitimate access: Rx compounded (503A).
  • Last reviewed: October 1, 2026.
